Words of Widsom

Ponyboy receives two pieces of advice at the end of chapter 9.

"I was crazy, you know that, kid? Crazy for wantin' Johnny to stay out of trouble, for not wantin' him to get hard. If he'd been like me he'd never have been in this mess. If he'd got smart like me he'd never have run into that church. That's what you get for helpin' people. Editorials in the paper and a lot of trouble ... You'd better wise up, Pony ... you get tough like me and you don't get hurt. You look out for yourself and nothin' can touch you."
~Dallas Winston

"Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold ... "
~ Johnny Cade

  1. 1.I think Pony will listen to Johnny because Pony likes Johnny better as a friend and plus, those were Johnny's last words to Pony so Ponyboy would feel more inclined to listen to Johnny's advise.

    2. I would probably be more apt to follow Dally's advice because Dally is smart in that way and he doesn't get hurt as much as Johnny so that is good advice.

    3. I would tell Pony to not get too attached to things because I think he will get to emotional about Johnny dying and that will affect him.

    1. I agree with Andrew on 3 because you can't always have friends or family or pets.

    3. Sorry I totally disagree! I think he will listen to Johnny as you said, however you do not know that Dally gets more hurt than Johnny, did this have a previous, like, prelude before the start that I totally spaced or something? Andrew do you remember who Dallas is? I will tell you. He is a drunken man, he gets in fight ( I'm guessing that he gets hurt worse than you think, I don't think a handy dandy hello kitty band-aid will help!!!). Are we talking about the same old Dally here, or is that another thing I missed~from charly

  2. 1. I think ponyboy will follow Two-bit, because they are both close friends and like to mess around with each other.

2.I would really follow sodapop's advice. Because he seems like he has seen more people and place than me.

    3. I would tell ponyboy to not worry so much about Johnny. And, I would also tell him to that you don't always have to keep every friend you know, because some of them either move away or die.

    1. Thomas, finely, someone agrees with me about Two-bit's advice. I still don't agree with you reasoning though, Pony isn't friends with Two-bit, he's just kinda there.

    2. 1. I think that Ponyboy will listen to Johnny because they were best friends, ran away together, and almost died together.

      2. I would follow Dally's advice because with his advice comes a story to back up what he means.

      3. I would tell Pony to do what he thinks is right to do in his eyes, not the eyes of others.

    3. When did Two-bit's advice come in?

  3. 1. He will probably folloy Johnny's advice because ner when he talked to Randy he was starting to think that someone was going to get hurt and that fighting is bad.

    2. i would follow Johnnys advice because I would not want to have a poliece record, and my dad told me that if I ever went to jail that he wouldn't get me out.

    3. I would give Pony the Advice to stay out of fights and to stay clean as in poliece record clean

    1. Having a police record doesn't matter: Pony could get a police record just for being a greaser, so I wouldn't worry about that too much. You don't have to do something wrong to get a police record.

    2. I have to agree with Andrew on this one. If the police just don't happen to like your "kind", they could and probably would arrest you for no good reason or just on slight suspision of you being the one who did something wrong.

  4. 1. I think that Ponyboy will folow Johnny's advice bacause Johnny is more of a friend to ponyboy than Dally.
    2. I would folow Johnny's advice because it makes sense and I already use my head, most of the time.
    3. i would say to Ponyboy that sometimes you don't think, but your heart is in the right place. Keep it that way.

  5. 1. I think Ponyboy will end up following Johnny's advice because Dally's comment may of meant something to him, but Johnny and Ponyboy were best friends, so I think his comment meant even more, and its really what he's been thinking all along just in different terms. I also think that Ponyboy may try to follow Dally's advice at first, but will keep thinking about Johnny and find out that Johnny was right. I think Ponyboy may even stop fighting like Randy did, but that is only a guess because that would mean giving up everything he has with the gang and I think it would detatch him from his brothers some too, although they would still love him.
    2. I would more likely follow Johnny's advice because that just who I am. I don't think I would be able to be like Dally.
    3. If I gave Pony advice I would tell him not to give up hope and to just keep going, follow your heart, but make sure you are still listening to your mind.

      2. I would follow Dally's advice because Dally is usually right about that sort of thing and I'm also not sure what Jhonny meant.
      3. I would tell Ponyboy to not get into trouble with the police, because I think he will get very mad that Jhonny died and he will try to get back at the Socs even though it wasn't their fault he died.

  8. 1. Ponyboy will need to follow Dallas Winston's advice, because he won't always be able to do the right thing and stay gold. On the contrary Ponyboy will be able to keep himself from getting hurt in the hood.

    2. I would try to follow the advice of Dally, because it would be almost impossible to stay good forever. I also think that it wouldn't be easy to harden your heart, but it would be easier than being perfect; I also have a fairly big build, so it wouldn't be that hard for me to protect myself.

3.I would tell Ponyboy to stay himself. He has a good soul, but he's going through a lot of trauma and hard times, and that might change him.

    1. I agree with you on all of your answers and in my opinion it is better to be the person you want to be and not the person somebody else wants you to be. Dally was made the way he is in the book for a reason and he is not necessarily wrong for being like that, but I also think in all serioceness that he was a little crazy in what he was saying because of everything that was going on. I would also give very similar advice.

  11. 1.I think ponyboy can take both of the advice from Dally and Johnny because both of the advice helps him out.
2.I can take advice from Dally Winston because he is much older than me and wiser than I am.
3.I would tell Ponyboy that you are your our person and you should stay the sameperson you are now Ponyboy.

  12. 1. I think that Ponyboy should only take Johnny's advice because it's better advice and those where Johnny's last words, so he should respect his wish.
    2. I would be more apt to follow Dally's advice because if you show your emotions, you could get feelings hurt and all that pain would just well up inside until you broke.
    3. The advice that I would have given Ponyboy is to stay true to yourself, but to also try and toughen up just a little bit so that he doesn't get hurt.

    1. I agree with your advice to Ponyboy. You should always make your own decisions, but you should also toughen up a bit so that when you make the wrong decision, you don's get hurt too badly. I would also follow Dally's advice and I agree with your reason. We all will get hurt emotionally, so you need to toughen up to be able to live through the pain.

  13. 1. I think that Ponyboy will take Johnny's advise.Ponyboy and Johnny are closer so I think that Ponyboy will think about what Johnny said over, and over, and over again.I think that Ponyboy will get more out of it than with Dally's advice.
    2. I would take Johnny's advise because it is a lot more meaningful-since those were his last words. I would take Dally's advice as a brotherly advice, but not as a powerful advise.
3.I would tell Ponyboy to stay the way he is and don't fight out of anger(it doesn't get you anywhere!) ;)I would also tell him to be more independent, because people will disappoint you, and you need to learn without them.

  14. I think Pony will be inclined to follow Johnny. Ithink this because his best bud died and he would probably want to follow his wishes. You dig? I, furthermore, I would be more apt to follow Johnny If I was Pony cause yeah Dally got "them" looks and all, he's got a heart to do but, Johnny is sweet, wise, and they were his last wishes as I was saying before. Of all those really sad events I would say, "It's okay Pony. Johnny had you but, know set him free." You dig.

  16. 1. I think Pony will go with Johnny, because Johnny used his favorite poem to help him understand more.
2.I would go with Dallas's comment, because he describes more and would want you to try to be as good as him and how he feels.
    3. Everyone sees the same sunset.

  17. 1. I think that Ponyboy will try to follow Johnny's advice in the end because it means more to him since they were so close and it was his dying wish. Ponyboy has been thinking that he has wanted to stop fighting and that he has wanted to be more than what's thought of him and all Greasers. Johnny's advice will be the best choice, but he might be worried about losing his gang and his brothers. I think that Ponyboy will try to follow Dally's advice first though, because he wants to fit in and not lose his friends and family.
    2. I would follow Johnny's advice because although it would be a hard thing to do, I would want to accomplish something in life and stay clean. Also, I am a good kid and couldn't see hardening into something like Dally.
    3. My advice to Ponyboy would be to stay true to who you are as an individual. You don't have to follow in the paths of anyone around you. Aim toward your goals and work hard to get what you want and deserve. The people around you will understand and support you. Believe in yourself and your opinions. Follow your heart while still being smart about your decisions.

  21. 1. I think Ponyboy will follow Johnny's advice because Ponyboy seemed closer to Johnny as a friend and that advice was Johnny's last words. Ponyboy would also be inclined to follow Johnny's advice because Ponyboy was tired of the fighting between the Socs and the Greasers, and he would want to stop fighting and stay clean.
    2. I would follow Dally's advice to Ponyboy. When I get my feelings hurt or I get angry, I huddle up inside a shell and don't let my emotions show. Like Dally said, if you harden nobody can hurt you. When you let your emotions show too much, you only end up hurting yourself and others. Some emotions are better to contain inside you.
    3. My advice to Ponyboy would be to show thanks for what he has. You never know what will be there one day and gone the next. You have to love things while they are still gold, before the sinfulness of our world shows through the beauty.

    1. I agree with your opinion of what advise Ponyboy would be more likely to follow, and what your advise to Ponyboy would be, but i would rather follows Johnny's advise. 2. YA! That's what i thought too! Because Ponyboy doesn't like want to end up like a thug ya know? But it could go both ways because it seems to me Pony seems to look up to people like Dally and Two-Bit.

      Delete
  22. 1. I would assume that Ponyboy with take both of their advise under consideration, but he will probably focus more toward what Johnny had said to him.First of all, Johnny and Ponyboy both had to go through running away and hiding together, and their friendship really strengthened. Second, Ponyboy would really try to follow Johnny's advice because he had used a line from his favorite poem, so it would mean more to him. Lastly, considering the fact that these were Johnny's last words, it would be normal for anyone to remember those last words, so he will probably try all his life to fulfill tat advise because that was what he died saying (kind of like trying to fulfill someone's wish after they expire).
    2. I would more likely be able to fulfill the advise of Johnny. I think staying gold is also something that everyone needs to do, due to the fact that many people go all their lives without realizing that they need to loosen up and keep living to the fullest. Also, staying gold would be my choice because if one stays gold they will likely not have to take Dally's advise to thought, because you might make better decisions than he had (sending them to the church to hide).
    3. My advise to Ponyboy would be to stay hopeful. Ponyboy had already been through much trouble and hurt, but according to his situation, things can turn into trouble in an instant. Staying hopeful will help him through Johnny's death, any other trouble with the Socs, and trying to keep his family and gang living happy.

2.And i think pony would fulfill both johnny and dally because Pony is the type of person who listens to his freinds and never lets them down so thats what i think.

  24. 1. I think that Ponyboy will be more apt to use Dally's advice because he is known for not using his brain at times. If Ponyboy takes Dally's advice, he will be more wise and brave; and he will learn to stand up for himself and what he believes.
    2. I would also be more apt to take Dally's advice because it gives me courage to not be afraid and to stand up to what I think is right and what is wrong. Also, Dally's advice gives me the courage that there is still tomarrow and God is always with me, especially in my times of trouble.
    3. I would have given Ponyboy the advice that though times seem to be rough, keep your head up. God is always there and he may suprise you at the times that you least expect him. Also, always keep your guard up in the world around you because you never know what will happen next.

  25. 1. I think Ponyboy will follow Johnny's advice, because Johnny was closer to Pony than Dally was, and Ponyboy doesn't want to end up as a thug always breaking and stealing things like Tim Shepards gang.
    2. I would follow Johnny's because, I would hate to have Johnny tell me those words as his last words and it would haunt me forever. And on top of that, I don't want to end up like Dally. I'm to pretty and nice! ;) haha!
    3. I would give Ponyboy advice to just keep going through life, because there are going to be hard times, and life will bring many challenges and he needs to keep his head up, do good in school and sports and whatever he does and keep positive thoughts. And things will eventually get better.

    1. I know it would haunt you not to follow Johnny's advice, but Dally's advice is the kind that will save you a bunch of pain. I don't really EVER show my emotions anymore because they've been stepped on too many times for me to even want to bother trying unless it's like someone that I REALLY trust, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to stay myself or that I dont have dreams

  26. My question is did Johnny's parents try following similar advice to Dally's, is that why the are abusive and so mean and not understanding? Is it because they tried to shut everything out and got so hard and mixed up that they couldn't even raise their own son right. If they had followed Johnny's advice would they have ended up being just as good of parents as Ponyboy's. Was it because they shut everything out that they turned to drugs and alcholhol because they had nothing else to, since nobody wanted to be around them because they were impossible to live with. I think a lot of the choices Johnny's parents made were as a resort to having no friends and being hard and toughening up.

    1. Those are really good questions and I wonder the same thing! Maybe if they would have opened themselves up more and turned to other things to pass their time, they wouldn't have been such horrible parents. 29. You have to be sweet in this world, or it is good to look up to right? Yet you have to sometimes be a tiny bit more sour than the average cupcake. My brother is exeptional at times and when I cry he will just say that I am wimpy. So I got to be tough. Take a lemon, for example, I love lemons. Some parts are sweet, others are a bit sour, but it never is too sour. It is like life, yet some people really are too tough. Am I right, Or have I (oh yeah I already lost my mind so...) lost my marbles. You tell me. I don't just want my opinion!

  30. 1. I think Pony will want to follow Johnny so not to disrespect his final wishes.
    2. I would probably follow Dally's advice because in this world, sweet gets eaten alive. Other than making friends, what do you get in this would by being nice and perfect.
    3. My knew advice for Pony would be to be compassionate to those who need it and cream those who deserve to be hurt.

  31. After today's discussion, I started to really think about what advice is the best to follow. We need to stay clean, stay good, and stay smart, but I guess we also need to be tough. If we aren't we will be used and abused. We should take parts of both and use both of them in our lives. Johnny's parents were hard, rude, mean, and too tough. They treated Johnny so bad, but if you think about it, growing up in that environment helped make him who he was. If he hadn't gone through all of those tough times, maybe he wouldn't have turned out so gentle and kind. He was able to learn from his parents' mistakes and he knew what he didn't want to act like. If he would have been tough and hard like Dally there is no way he would have gone in to save the kids from the fire, nor be such a great and loyal friend. We need to find a happy medium. I think that if Ponyboy wants to accomplish something in life and be more than just the average Greaser then he will need to stick to Johnny's advice in the long run. He needs to keep himself out of trouble and do what is best for himself.
